SE is based on the understanding that trauma isn’t just what happens to us, it’s how the body respondsInstead of revisiting traumatic events in detail, it works with physical sensations (the “soma”) to gently release this stored stress..

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a body-oriented approach to trauma healing developed by Peter A. Levine. It is grounded in the idea that trauma is not just a psychological memory, but a physiological state, a dysregulation in the nervous system caused by incomplete survival responses.
SE focuses on the connection between the body and the nervous system, rather than relying primarily on thoughts or storytelling. When a person experiences overwhelm, the natural fight, flight, or freeze responses may not fully complete. This can leave the body “stuck” in states of hyperarousal (anxiety, tension) or shutdown (numbness, dissociation).
Somatic Experiencing helps resolve this by working directly with felt sensations in the body—often subtle and gradual—rather than revisiting trauma in a potentially overwhelming way.
Tracking sensations
Clients are guided to notice internal bodily experiences such as:
Tightness
heat
tingling
Breathing patterns
Muscle activation or release
This builds awareness of how the body holds stress.
Titration (working in small doses)
Instead of diving fully into traumatic material, SE approaches it in very small, manageable steps. This prevents overwhelm and helps the nervous system stay regulated.
Pendulation (moving between states)
Attention gently shifts between:
Activation (discomfort, tension)
Regulation (calm, safety, neutrality)
This natural rhythm helps the body learn it can move out of distress and return to balance.
As the process unfolds, the body may release stored energy through:
Subtle movements
Trembling
Changes in breath
A sense of settling or relief
These are signs that previously interrupted survival responses are completing.
SE is used for:
Trauma and PTSD
Chronic stress and anxiety
Panic and overwhelm
Dissociation and numbness
Physical symptoms linked to stress
Somatic Experiencing helps people reconnect with their bodies and safely process stored survival energy, allowing the nervous system to return to a more natural state of regulation. Rather than “talking through” trauma, it works by gently renegotiating it through bodily experience, leading to increased resilience, stability, and a felt sense of safety.
